How Often Should You Service Your Baume & Mercier?

The short answer: Baume & Mercier recommends a complete service every 3-5 years for standard movements, and every 5-7 years for watches fitted with their newer Baumatic calibre. If you have a quartz model, the battery should be replaced every 2-3 years, with a full service at longer intervals.

That's the manufacturer's guidance and as an official UK service centre for Baume & Mercier, our watchmakers broadly agree with it.

But the right interval for your watch depends on how you wear it, how old it is, and whether it's showing any early signs of trouble.

Here's the practical breakdown.

Baume & Mercier's Recommended Service Intervals

Not every B&M watch runs on the same movement, and the service schedule varies accordingly:

Quartz models (Classima quartz, Hampton quartz, older ladies' models) Battery replacement every 2-3 years, or when the seconds hand starts jumping in 4-second intervals that's the end-of-life indicator on most quartz calibres.

A full service (movement inspection, gasket replacement, water resistance check) should be carried out every 5-7 years or combined with a battery change when timing aligns.

One important note: don't leave a dead battery sitting in a quartz watch. Exhausted batteries can leak, and the resulting corrosion damages the movement turning what would have been a £50 battery replacement into a significantly more expensive repair.

Standard automatic movements (ETA 2892, 2824, 7750 and variants) Full service every 3-5 years.

These are the workhorses in most of the Clifton and Classima automatic range. They're reliable calibres with a long track record, but the lubricants degrade over time regardless of whether the watch is being worn.

A watch sitting in a drawer still needs servicing as the oils dry out just as they would through use, albeit more slowly.

Baumatic calibre (BM12 and BM13) Full service every 5-7 years. The Baumatic is Baume & Mercier's in-house movement, introduced in 2018, and it's designed for longer service intervals.

It uses a silicon escapement and hairspring, which are antimagnetic and reduce friction meaning less lubricant degradation and better long-term timekeeping.

If you own a Clifton Baumatic, you genuinely can wait longer between services without compromising the movement's health.

Annual water resistance check Regardless of movement type, Baume & Mercier recommends an annual water resistance check if you regularly expose your watch to water.

Gaskets deteriorate over time, and a failed seal can allow moisture into the case, one of the most damaging things that can happen to a watch movement. This is a quick, inexpensive check that can prevent costly damage.

Warning Signs Your Baume & Mercier Needs Servicing Now

Don't wait for the next scheduled service date if your watch is showing any of these symptoms:

Losing or gaining more than a few seconds per day. A well-regulated Baume & Mercier automatic should keep time within -4/+6 seconds per day in normal wear.

If it's consistently running outside that range, the movement needs attention and the lubricants may be degrading or a component may be wearing.

Shorter power reserve than usual. If your automatic B&M used to run for 40+ hours off the wrist and now dies after 20, the mainspring or barrel may need servicing.

Baumatic owners should be getting close to 120 hours (5 days) when fully wound, any significant drop from that baseline warrants a check.

The crown feels gritty or stiff. A smooth crown action is a sign of a healthy watch. Resistance or gritty turning can indicate debris in the winding mechanism or a deteriorating crown tube seal.

Moisture or condensation under the crystal. This is urgent as even a small amount of moisture can cause corrosion that spreads quickly through the movement. If you spot fogging under the glass, don't wait for a scheduled service. Get it looked at immediately.

It's been more than 7 years since the last service. Even if the watch seems to be running well, lubricants that have been sitting for 7+ years are almost certainly degraded. A watch can appear to keep good time while the dry pivots and jewels are accumulating wear that will eventually lead to more expensive problems.

What Happens If You Skip Servicing?

A mechanical watch doesn't simply stop when it needs servicing. It degrades gradually, which is why it's tempting to put it off.

Here's what actually happens inside the movement over time:

Years 1-5 (within recommended interval): Lubricants are doing their job, protecting metal-on-metal contact points. Timekeeping is stable, power reserve is consistent.

Years 5-8 (approaching overdue): Lubricants begin to dry and thicken. Friction increases at pivot points, particularly in the escapement. Timekeeping may start to drift. The watch still functions, but wear is accelerating.

Years 8-12+ (significantly overdue): Dried lubricants act as an abrasive rather than a protectant. Pivot holes in the jewels begin to wear, the mainspring may start to lose elasticity, and the balance wheel's amplitude drops. The watch may still run, but internal damage is accumulating with every tick.

The practical consequence: a watch serviced within the recommended interval typically needs a routine service; clean, lubricate, regulate, replace gaskets.

A watch that's been neglected for 10+ years often needs replacement parts (worn pivots, damaged jewels, corroded components), which pushes the cost well above a standard service.

In our experience, the most expensive Baume & Mercier repairs we see are not the oldest watches but the ones that have gone the longest without any servicing at all.

What Does a Baume & Mercier Service Include?

A full service at SwissMade covers the complete manufacturer-approved process:

The movement is fully disassembled and every component inspected. Worn or damaged parts are replaced with genuine Baume & Mercier components. All parts are ultrasonically cleaned, then reassembled with the correct grade of synthetic lubricant at each friction point.

The movement is regulated across multiple positions, and the case is refinished (unless you prefer to keep the original patina). Gaskets are replaced, and the watch is pressure-tested to its original water resistance rating before a multi-day observation period.

A full service starts from £400 with a comprehensive 2-year warranty. Battery replacement for quartz models starts from £50. Full pricing details are in our Baume & Mercier service cost guide.

We also provide a free insured postage pack (covered up to £25,000) for customers outside London.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I service my Baume & Mercier?

Every 3-5 years for standard automatic movements, 5-7 years for Baumatic calibres, and a battery replacement every 2-3 years for quartz models. An annual water resistance check is recommended if you regularly expose the watch to water.

Do Baume & Mercier watches have batteries?

Some do. Baume & Mercier produces both quartz (battery-powered) and automatic (mechanical) watches. The Classima, Hampton, and some ladies' collections include quartz models that require battery replacement every 2–3 years. The Clifton range and any model with "Baumatic" or "automatic" on the dial are mechanical and don't use batteries.

How long do Baume & Mercier watches last?

With regular servicing, a mechanical Baume & Mercier should last several decades, potentially a lifetime. The movements are robust and well-constructed. The most common reason B&M watches stop working is lack of servicing rather than any inherent manufacturing limitation.

How do I know if my Baume & Mercier needs servicing?

Key warning signs include losing or gaining more than a few seconds per day, a noticeably shorter power reserve, a gritty or stiff crown action, and moisture or condensation under the crystal. If it's been more than 7 years since the last service, book one regardless of how the watch appears to be running.

How much does a Baume & Mercier service cost?

At SwissMade, a full service starts from £345 with a 2-year warranty. Battery replacement starts from £50. We're an Official UK Service Centre for Baume & Mercier using genuine manufacturer parts. See our full Baume & Mercier service cost guide for detailed pricing.
